
OUR GREAT NORTHERN STORY
Hand-blended in small batches in Northwich, Cheshire, Great Northern Spice Co is an artisan spice company founded and run by a passionate husband-and-wife team dedicated to bold, real flavour without the bad stuff. Read our story below.



HOW IT STARTED
Our journey began in our own Cheshire kitchen, where Paul spent years perfecting his own spice blends for healthy meals that were free from sugar or nasty stuff.
“I started Great Northern Spice Co because Lotty was frustrated with the limited ready-made spice options in supermarkets that were packed with sugar, salt and additives. Lotty has type 1 diabetes (from a young age) so she's always been conscious of what she eats. Our cupboard was full of individual spices that took time to measure out (and half of them went out of date). We wanted simple, flavour-packed blends you can grab, toss over chicken or veg in the air fryer, or use to make a great curry without the fuss. But nothing existed - even some smaller brands contain crazy amounts of sugar, caking agents and citric acids (read your labels)” - Paul

Paul got to work crafting clean, flavourful alternatives using only natural, high-quality ingredients in to small batches. In 2023, we started the business with around 12 products at local artisan markets in Cheshire, which quickly grew to over 40+ Seasonings, Rubs & Curry Blends by 2024. We also introduced flavoured Sea Salts and infused Organic Olive Oils to our range in late 2025 - using our signature herbs and spices in creative ways.

OUR BIG MILESTONES​
In 2025, we were proud to be finalists in the Cheshire Life Awards for Food & Drink Producer of the Year, and won a Great Taste Award for our Cape Malay Curry Blend — recognitions that reflect our commitment to quality artisan food. In the January 2026 issue of Cheshire Life Magazine, we were featured in the 'Food Producers' section with our story which made local news.
TODAY & THE FUTURE
Today, our products are available through our online shop, at artisan markets and food festivals across the North West. We also wholesale at an expanding number of farm shops, delis, butchers and independent stockists — including The Hollies Farm Shop and other local outlets.
We'd love to continue our growth by supplying more wholesale stockists further afield and collaborate with restaurants and brands who align with our ethos. We'll also be applying for more awards (wish us luck) and you'll find us at various food festivals in 2026.​
