Sicilian herb meatballs (or veggie balls) is a classic, comforting dish that pairs tender meatballs with a rich tomato sauce. Serve alongside gnocchi for a delicious meal. Our Sicilian Herb Seasoning elevates your sauce to the next level.
This Sicilian Herb Meatballs (or Veggie Balls) & Gnocchi recipe uses the Great Northern Spice Sicilian Herb Seasoning and Great Northern Spice Co Mediterranean Herbs Olive Oil.
INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoon of Great Northern Spice Sicilian Herb Seasoning
350g of your meatballs or veggie balls option
1 tablespoon of Great Northern Spice Mediterranean Herbs Olive Oil
1 medium red onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, or 2 teaspoons chopped garlic
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
500g passata
200ml red wine (or 200ml beef stock + 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar)
1 tablespoon tomato purée
Worcestershire sauce (optional)
HOW TO COOK
In a large frying pan on a medium to high heat, add the olive oil and start to fry the meatballs / veggie balls until browned - 5 minutes. Then transfer to a side plate and cover.
Next, add the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery to the pan and fry until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the tomato puree and cook for another minute.
Add the red wine and stir in. Let it simmer for 5 minutes. Add the passata and 2 tablespoons of Sicilian Herb Seasoning and stir in.
Let the sauce simmer on low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Try splashing a little bit of Worcestershire sauce for extra flavour.
Return the meatballs / veggie balls to the pan and let them cook in the sauce for another 15-20 minutes. Serve in bowls and enjoy!
TIPS FOR SERVING
Serve in a bowl over the gnocchi, or on their own with some crusty bread. For a low carb option, serve the meatballs on top of a salad bowl.
