Craving your favourite Southern Fried dish? Make it at home with our tasty, healthier blend – perfect for the air fryer, oven, or if you're feeling cheeky, a deep fry!

Southern Fried Recipe


Meat option is the classic chicken.

Veggie or vegan options include tofu, okra, cauliflower and courgette.

Ingredients


  • 2 tablespoons of Great Northern Spice Southern Fried Seasoning

  • 4 chicken legs/thighs or your choice of ingredient (veggie or vegan options include tofu, okra, cauliflower and courgette.)

  • Buttermilk (deep fryer option only)

  • Bowl of flour (to cover 2 chicken legs = 3 tablespoons of flour to every 1 tablespoon of Southern fried seasoning)


How to Cook (deep fry)


  1. Prepare your meat or non meat option by coating it in a bowl of buttermilk. If you have time to leave this in the fridge for 2 hours, or overnight - great! If not, don't worry.

    If you don't have buttermilk, skip to step 2.


  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and our Southern fried seasoning (3 tablespoons of flour for every 1 tablespoon of Southern fried seasoning.)

    Let any excess buttermilk dry off then add your main ingredient and coat fully. Add to the deep fryer tray.


  3. Heat oil to 175°C in your deep fryer. Carefully lower the tray in to the oil and cook for the below times:


    Chicken wings: 8–10 minutes

    Chicken drumsticks/thighs: 12–15 minutes

    Chicken breasts (boneless): 8–12 minutes

    Chicken tenders/strips: 4–6 minutes

    Okra: 3–5 minutes

    Cauliflower: 4-6 minutes

    Tofu: 3–5 minutes

    Courgette: 2-4 minutes


  4. Ensure all food is thoroughly cooked and please be careful that the hot oil doesn't splash. Get ready to serve with your choice of side and sauce.

How to Cook (air fry or oven)


  1. If using the oven, preheat to 180°C.


  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and our Southern fried seasoning. (3 tablespoons of flour for every 1 tablespoon of Southern fried seasoning.)

    Add your main ingredient and coat fully before transferring to the oven tray or air fryer.


  3. Cook for the below times, turning over half way through.


    Chicken wings: 12–15 minutes

    Chicken drumsticks/thighs: 20-25 minutes

    Chicken breasts (boneless): 18-22 minutes

    Chicken tenders/strips: 12–15 minutes

    Okra: 10-12 minutes

    Cauliflower: 12–15 minutes

    Tofu: 12–15 minutes

    Courgette: 10-12 minutes


  4. Ensure all food is thoroughly cooked, and get ready to serve with your choice of side and sauce.
